PRESS RELEASE

TWO-ROOM COLORED SCHOOLHOUSE GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY

First Baptist Church, Perryville, KY is proud to announce the restoration of its Two-Room Colored Schoolhouse.  A ceremonial groundbreaking service and community picnic will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2014 from 2:00-5:00 p.m.  The celebration will include food, prizes, and Bible challenge games.

The schoolhouse is located at 105 R L Sleet (McCook) Street in Perryville, KY.  The church phone number is (859) 349-9000.

The schoolhouse will be restored to its original purposes with accommodations for the physically challenged.  When restored, it will be re-named the Amelia Sleet Burton Colored Schoolhouse.  Ms. Burton, who attended the school as a child, taught there from the age of 16 until the school closed.

The renovation will include the Rev. Dr. Willie F. Newby, Jr. Memorial Library in commemoration of the pastor of First Baptist Church from 1988 to 2008.  Rev. Newby’s vision was to renovate the schoolhouse during his tenure.  First Baptist Perryville is excited about the opportunity to bring this project to reality.

The public is welcomed to attend.

Donations towards the project may be sent to First Baptist Church Perryville, PO Box 207, Perryville, KY 40468.
